Even though a lot of people didn't like Doom 3, I liked it, feeling it did enough to stand on it's own, but where Doom 3 succeeded for me I feel Quake 4 failed. It runs on the same engine as Doom 3, and is pretty much what Doom 3 is to that franchise, a step away from its roots to a more linear, cinematic experience. Part of me thinks it's rather cool how they continued the story this way, the other part of me thinks it was unnecessary. Quake 4 is a direct sequel to Quake 2, you play as a different character but the story picks up right after your character in Quake 2 defeats the final boss there. I played the game on "General" difficulty however and it was such a horrible experience that I barely managed to push through the game and that has to be reflected on how I rate the game, if only to dissuade others from playing the game on this setting. This game gets a 5/10 because it was a half-decent FPS for about half its length and below-average in the beginning.ġ0h 42m PlayedTo a degree I feel somewhat bad at rating Quake 4 so poorly, the reality is it's not entirely a bad game, a misguided game perhaps, but it's not bad. The real star of the game actually turned out to be the complete set of weapons, which you gain by about 2/3 of the way through I thought it had some fun ones mixed in. Fighting with military allies was occasionally but not always fun. Even with mid-game changes in movement, Quake 4 still always felt overly sluggish, not to mention reliant on backtracking and repetitive in terms of objectives. It does improve afterwards, especially with the acquisition of weapons such as the Lightning Gun, yet it's hard to forget just how much the start drags before you get those upgrades. The first three hours, though, present a brown and gray military shooter with absolutely zero interesting sci-fi elements. I'm a Quake 2 fan, so I don't dislike this game for its surface-level differences compared to Quake 1. This is a nice change to Quake which has always been on foot.8h 42m PlayedFrom start to finish, Quake 4 undergoes probably the biggest positive transformation I've seen in a game – however, the start is so completely drab that it's not even worth it. All handle really well and these sections are both fun and challenging.

You either mount a machine gun, drive a tank, or a mech. You’ll walk through rooms and lights will dim and enemies will run across corridors, your teammates will get dragged off and tortured, and there are also some really cool vehicle sections. I just really love the atmosphere Quake 4 delivers. This allows you to create a strategy that works best for you. You take the five weaker ones out with a grenade or a rocket then deal with the railgun guys with your dark matter gun, or you can shoot rockets at their feet. Each enemy has to be taken care of differently, so you have had five weaker enemies and two guys with railguns. The game sports great AI with enemies dodging your shots and ducking behind cover. These are all gruesome-looking enemies that are both terrifying to look at and really fun to fight. You have floating enemies that shoot rockets at you, you have giant spider robots, and you even have massive Strogg with shields and railguns. The game has some pretty neat enemies types ranging from Grunts that rush you with their bulky bodies or Berserker who are all about melee. This lets you easily change your strategy around what gun works in what situation. Throughout the campaign, you can unlock upgrades for these weapons like clip extenders, scopes, and extra damage.
